About Tuttles' Trinkets

Two-Toned Jewelry

All of the wire used in my designs is either 14KT rolled gold wire (gold filled) or sterling silver wire (.925 silver). At times, I used both metals in a design to create a two-toned effect.

Gold Filled was used extensively in the 1800’s and is very strong and durable. It is not "gold plated". It has 100 times the amount of gold than can be found in gold plated. It is created by taking a sheet of 14Kt. Gold, and bonding it through extreme heat and pressure, to a core of semi-precious metal (brass). The end result is a 14kt. tube which is strong, durable, and resistant to tarnish because of it's 14kt. gold covering. This gold metal composition is what enables me to create the swirls and curls used in my special designs. This is a very sophisticated process and only a few mills in the world do it. It should not be confused with gold plated.
Care of 14Kkt. Rolled Gold Jewelry
Just care for it as you would any other jewelry. It is quite durable. A simple inexpensive way to clean rolled gold jewelry (gold-filled) is to soak it for a minute or two in a mild solution of ammonia and water or a commercial liquid jewelry cleaner. Rinse the jewelry thoroughly with water afterwards and let dry. It can also be cleaned with the same polishing cloth that you use for your sterling silver.
Sterling Silver, sometimes stamped .925, is an alloy of 92.5% silver, and 7.5% of copper. It can be antiqued to a dark black or given a high polish.

Care of Sterling Silver Jewelry

Sterling silver will polish up by rubbing or buffing it with a soft cotton cloth or a Sunshine Cloth. If you store silver in plastic bags with an interlocking seal, it will be less prone to tarnish. (Do NOT store pearls in plastic bags!)
